About the Company
Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU) is a Boise-based, mission-driven small business dedicated to safeguarding those who serve, protect, rescue, and defend around the world. For more than 30 years, ASU has supported real-world aviation missions by designing and manufacturing advanced Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS)–compatible aircraft lighting and filtration upgrades.
ASU’s products enable pilots and aircrew to safely and effectively operate with night vision goggles (NVGs) in low-light and nighttime environments. By enhancing situational awareness and reducing risk during critical operations, ASU solutions play a vital role in improving safety and helping save lives across law enforcement, emergency medical, military, and special operations aviation.
Founded in 1995 in Boise, Idaho, by former AH-64 Apache pilot Mike Atwood, ASU was instrumental in pioneering FAA-approved NVG use for first responders and law enforcement. Atwood contributed to the development of the FAA’s night vision regulations and secured Part 135 NVG operational approval in 1999. Since then, ASU has supported some of the earliest NVG adopters, including Enloe and Mercy Medical Centers and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Today, ASU continues to combine operational insight, engineering expertise, and a commitment to mission success to support aviation professionals operating in the world’s most demanding environments.
